ABOUT US

Medieval European Re-enactment in Your Local Area

The Society of the Middle Ages, Inc. is a 501(c) educational non-profit organization dedicated to the study and recreation of cultural aspects of the European middle ages. Our time period runs from roughly the fall of the western Roman Empire (early 5th century) to the beginning of the Renaissance (late 15th century). Activities run the gamut from hundreds of crafts, arts, and sciences to the martial arts (rattan sword fighting, live steel fighting, thrown weapons, archery, equestrian) to the gentler arts (heraldry, medieval gaming, royal court, etc.).

The Borough of Cnoc Fraochán is a local chapter of the SMA, Inc. that encompasses the area of OH, PA, NY, and WV between Buffalo, NY and Wheeling, WV, and between Columbus, OH and State College, PA. Most of our activity centers around the greater Youngstown-Sharon area, but activities can be found in all corners of the Borough for those interested in medieval pursuits. Our marshals hold regular practices in the martial arts, our Dean hosts regular A&S craft nights each month, and the group as a whole gathers for larger events about four times a year (in addition to events hosted by neighboring local groups.) We can also be found occasionally putting on demonstrations in public parks or around area schools as well as presenting classes on any number of topics both in person and online. At the end of the day, you might find us sitting around the fire pit enjoying a homemade beverage while singing songs or telling war stories. In short, there is something for everyone's interests.
